New balance MT610 Trail Running Shoes – Review

When planning for a long term or round the world trip it’s not always easy choosing the right footwear to take with you. You have to consider all of the activities that you plan to do like trekking the Himalayas in Nepal, climbing Mount Bromo in Indonesia or just walking the streets of Paris, and then you need to think of some random activities that you have never even thought about doing before, but may just encounter along the way. Think rock climbing in the islands of Thailand, riding a chopper in Australia or racing a bicycle down the ‘world’s most dangerous road’ in Bolivia
You could take your hiking boots, rock climbing shoes, motorbike boots and tennis shoes to cover all bases, but then you’d have to lug them all around with you in your backpack taking up valuable space and weighing you down.
Trying to find and then choose one pair that potentially covers ‘All bases’ is not an easy task.
When I found these New Balance MT610 Trail Running shoes they instantly ticked two of the main boxes for what to look for in a travel shoe.
- Lightweight.
- Excellent traction on the soles.
Weighing in at 9.4 ounces this in itself is reason enough to purchase them. Hiking boots would probably be my preferred choice for any trip, but the size and weight of boots when not in use is an instant NO for long term trips. I hardly even notice these at the bottom of my rucksack. The NB MT610 might lack angle support for trekking, but the traction is second to none. Scrambling up dirt tracks and mountains has been a pleasure.
Thanks to the super light material they also dry extremely quickly if you need to get them wet. Following some cave exploration in the Khao Sok National Park, Thailand where I was repeatedly climbing over sharp rocks and then swimming through fast flowing water, they were completely dry within four hours!
The ‘Acteva Lite’ Midsole and ‘EVA Foam’ Sock liner mean that I can walk in these shoes hours without any discomfort (apart from my dodgy knee)making them ideal for City Sightseeing, plus I actually use them for their intended use of Running.
These Trainers have been on the road with me for over a year now, and I’m yet to come across a situation they could not handle.
Note: To avoid criticism from your girlfriend I suggest choosing a color that she will approve. Bright green was not an option for me!!
